The main worries about pruning currants fall on the period of autumn before the onset of the first winter cold weather, immediately after the foliage falls. It is extremely important right now to prepare the plant for proper wintering, in the spring only by removing the branches that have been broken and frozen over the winter. So, in the fall, pruning is done as follows:

• old branches are subject to removal, on which fruiting has not been noticed;

• young one-year-old shoots that have reached a length of more than 20 cm, growing from the middle of the bush and posing a danger to “thicken” it, preventing the penetration of sunlight;

• 2-3 annual branches are cut so that they have 2-4 buds on each branch. The cut is made obliquely at a height of 5-6 mm above the kidney;

• dry, pest-prone branches. The drooping branches, almost lying on the ground or interfering with others, are mercilessly removed.

Important: Old branches (the age of which is determined by the darker color of the bark) are removed from the soil itself. The stumps do not need to be left, as new, potentially sterile shoots can begin to grow from them. Slices are processed with garden varnish.

Knowing how to cut currants in the fall, you can properly prepare the shrub for winter, so that in the spring the plant does not waste extra energy on the development of branches that will not bear fruit.

Acting according to this scheme, you can achieve high yields, large, juicy berries, filled with such vitamins we need.
