Watery eyes are usually an expression of emotion, but there are situations when the flowing tears have nothing to do with emotions. It often affects older people, but also younger people, running periodically or for a long time. The reason may lie in hypersensitivity of the eyes, mechanical injuries and diseases, but not only. Weather conditions can also irritate our eyesight, so it is worth learning how to care for your eyes in order to avoid persistent tearing.

Tearing accompanies us when cutting onions, because the smell irritates the nose, with strong sun and wind, as well as when we suffer from a runny nose and cold. Here are other common causes of “crying” eyes:

  1. infection – our eyes can succumb to various diseases and infections that are caused by viruses or bacteria. With a bacterial infection, on the second day, in addition to lacrimation, purulent-watery discharge appears. Viral infection is manifested by alternating tearing – first one eye waters, and then the other one starts to water. The main symptoms of infection, apart from tears, are burning, swelling, redness of the eye and sensitivity to radiation (sun, artificial light). In a not very advanced stage of infection, disinfectant drops can be used, but if there is no improvement within two or three days, it will be necessary to visit a doctor who will prescribe appropriate ointments and drops, and sometimes (in the case of inflammation of the lacrimal ducts) an antibiotic.
  2. acizbûn - a situation where a foreign body gets into the eye. Sometimes it’s a speck of dust, other times a piece of makeup (e.g. eyeliners), or a curled eyelash. The body reacts defensively to the foreign body, producing tears that are designed to remove the problem. But sometimes tears alone are not enough. Then we can help ourselves by rinsing the eye with boiled water or saline.
  3. Allergy – every allergy sufferer knows tearing from the autopsy, because it often accompanies allergy sufferers during, for example, pollen season. Then it occurs along with a runny nose, itching and burning of the skin. In addition to pollen seasons, some people feel the effects of allergies as a result of irritating the body with dust, chemicals, mites or animal hair. Allergy can be diagnosed with a blood test that measures IgE levels or skin tests.
  4. Wound in the cornea – corneal irritation can occur in various, sporadic situations, such as scratching it with a fingernail or a piece of material. Then a wound is created in it, which heals quite quickly, but in the future it may renew itself. Sometimes there is also an ulceration in the cornea, which, when combined with defects in this part of the eye, can cause glaucoma. All this causes tearing, which must not be underestimated.
  5. Dry eye syndrome – i.e. a disease caused by too little or too much tears. This happens when they do not have the correct composition and “adhesion”, so they flow immediately without stopping on the surface of the eye. It causes the knob to dry out because it is not properly protected and moisturized. For self-treatment, viscous eye drops and artificial tears can be used. If this does not bring results, it will be necessary to visit an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
