Scientists have found that foods with a high glycemic index increase the risk of lung cancer. These foods include, but are not limited to, white bread, baked goods, cornflakes, pasta, and white rice.

According to scientists, foods with a high glycemic index increase the risk of developing lung cancer, even in those who have never smoked (and non-smokers account for 12% of deaths from lung cancer). These foods raise blood glucose and insulin levels very quickly. This, in turn, activates the production of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor (IGF). Previously, elevated levels of this hormone have been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.

The new results showed that people who eat a lot of foods with the highest glycemic index have a 49% higher risk of lung cancer than those who eat foods with a low glycemic index. The lead author of the study, Dr.Stephanie Melkonyan from Zanko of texas MD Anderson Qansêr Navîne.
